To Eyeliner or Not to Eyeliner?
I am normally not an eyeliner wearer but when I first heard about a new liquid eyeliner from Japan during Fashion Week—I was intrigued. One of the reasons I find wearing liquid liner an issue is because of my Asian eyes. Our eyelids tend to have small or nonexistent creases. The few times I have attempted to use eyeliner—I end up looking like a panda from the smudging. Now with all these new foolproof eyeliners available—this could finally be the time to try a cat eye or get on the bandwagon for a splash of kohl on the lids. Beauty experts give us their favorites old and new:
Nick Barose, Makeup Artist
"New and easy to use —this Asian brand UZ by Flowfushi liquid liner pen has a great formula and is super delicate. It is a refined pen so you get elegant swoops.
For a more natural look, Lancome Artliner, has a bit of subtle shimmer so the lines don’t look too inky and comes in a softer black and brown so it’s not harsh—my mom loves it.
Serge Lutens Kohl liner, it’s a cake liner you put on with a brush and you can do any kind of lines. It’s very easy to control and you can re-wet it with a brush to make it more liquidy.
Glossier Play ColorSlide New Gel liner pencil comes in fun colors and is an easy way to add the eyes."
Valerie Zhang, Vogue China Beauty Director
"I am a huge eyeliner fan! I have tried at least 100 eyeliners. My favorite eyeliner is the Jill Stuart liquid eyeliner. I almost never use eye pencils as they are too easily smudged. This eyeliner is super easy to draw with—smooth and delicate. The best thing is it never smudges after a whole day! My favorite color is deep brown, it is good for deep brown eyes like mine. "
Kim Bui, Fashion Consultant
"I like the feline flick from Charlotte Tilbury in brown—super natural and I also really like the Marc Jacobs for black because it draws like a sharpie on your eye!"
Emma Strenner, Beauty Director at Large, Conde Nast International
"Troy Surratt, Auto Graphique Liner, $42. The inky finish has a great deep pigment. Its like Japanese calligraphy pen in terms of the brush. Doesn’t smudge and you get a great little flick at the end.
Jennifer Yee, Market & Beauty Director, CR Fashion Book
"Chanel, Chanel, CHANEL! Only Chanel, always. Le Crayon Khôl in Noir. I've used it for years. I love it because it's the perfect texture—not too creamy to where it'll run or smear and not too dry to where it'll tear your eyelid off upon application. I will never leave the house without my Chanel eyeliner on."
